Preliminary investigation into the fire that caused severe damage to the South Elgin KinderCare Wednesday morning shows the fire began on an outside wall, fire officials said. The building at 1250 W. Spring St. was not open for business when the fire started around 5:35 a.m. and no one was inside, fire and village officials said. No one was injured in the blaze. The building’s fire alarm reset itself but a passerby noticed smoke coming from the southwest corner of the building, said Kim Wascher, South Elgin’s Park and Recreation director and the village spokesperson.
